Physical and Psychological Problems among School Aged Children with βeta Thalassemia

Abstract
Abstract
Thalassemia is the most common hereditary anemia in Egypt. It is one of genetic diseases associated with physical and psychological problems. Aim of the study was to assess physical and psychological problems among school aged children with β-thalassemia. Research design: A descriptive design was used to conduct this study. Setting: the study was carried out in Hematology Clinic in Children Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. Subject: A purposive sample including eighty (80) school aged children having β-thalassemia from the previously mentioned setting. Tools of data collection: Three tools were used an interviewing questionnaire to assess children's knowledge about beta thalassemia, physical assessment sheet and Psychometric measures to assess psychological problems which include Depression Inventory Scale, Cooper Smith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale and Anxiety Scale. The results: : This study revealed that studied children had general weakness and fatigue which lead to repeat absenteeism and their psychological problems include mild level of anxiety, moderate level of depression and low level of self-esteem.Conclusion: This study concluded that the physical problems among school age children were pale skin, growth retardation, loss of appetite general weakness and fatigue. And the psychosocial problems among school age children were depression, low self-esteem and anxiety. Recommendation: the study recommended that further research to develop and establish official system to address thalassemia school aged children problems in the community and enhance physical and psychological support services.
