APOPTOSIS IN CHRONIC HEPATITIS C

Mohamed El Basel Hegazi;

Abstract

Hepatitis C virus is an important cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver damage associated with hepatitis C virus infection may be mediated by immune response. Apoptosis is one of the mechanisms of liver cell injury in chronic hepatitis C infection through Fas antigen expression. Fas antigen expression increases in patients with more activity and so could be used as an indicator of activity in patients with chronic HCV infection.
