Ocular Manifestation Of Protozoan Diseases

Abstract


Protozoan diseases are widely spread allover the world. Some of these protozoa affect the eye.


In toxoplasmosis the eye suffer from retinal necrosis with choroiditis and vitritis.


Amoebae are divided into free living like Acanthamoeba which affect the eye in the form of keratitis and parasitic like Entamoeba histolytica which may lead to orbital cystes.


In severe form of malaria there is hemorrhage and opacitication of the retina and in Leishmaniasis there is tropical sore in the eye lid or iridocyclitis.


Some cases of trypanosomiasis may have oedema of eye lids and enlarged lymph nodes.


Immunocompromised patient may have microsporidal kerato- conj ucti vi tis.


Patients with intestinal giardisis may suffer from iritis or retinal degeneration.
