EFFECT OF THYROID DYSFUNCTION ON CARDIAC PERFORMANCE

Abstract


The preserrt study was conducted in the Department of Internal Medicin, . Assiut University Hospital, and included 30 patients. Classified into two groups.


The first group comprise 20 patients with overt thyrotoxicosis studied at .. presentation and serially followed up after antithyroid treatment by I and 2 months. The second group comprise I 0 patients on long-tenn L-thyr'oxin therapy studied at presentation,.

The .control, group composed of 20 persons of age, sex, and body mass ip.dex matched with the studied groups.

Patients and Control was subjected to full history taking,

thorough. clinical examination, serum assay of T3, T4, TSH, and echocardiographic study.

The results' can lle summarized as follows:

-Thyrotoxicosis was associated with increased heart rate,

increased systolic and decreased diastolic blood pressure, enhanced

left ventricular mass index. These changes were corrected by effective treatment for thyrotoxicosis.


Long-term I thyrm:in treatment in doses that reduced serum thyrotophin to below nonnal had no effect on blood pressure, heart
