Abstract
Modification of the physical and chemical properties of polymers through radiation graft copolymeri ation of vinyl monomers offers an effective method without affectin? the original properties. The graft . copolymers exhibit properties whih are intermediate combination of . some of the characteristic propert)es of both the trunk polymer and grafted funcationalized monomer. uch graft copolymers have a wide applications in different fields as iuembranes for desalination of salt water, battery separators, contact lens and of special important in the field: of removal of heavy metals and dyestuff from waste waters. The present work can be divided into four parts:
1. Factors Affecting Radiation Graft Polymerization of Acrylonitrile and Its Binary Mixtures with N-vinyl Pyrrolidone Onto Low and High Density Polyethylene films
It was observed that the grafting yields were greatly influenced by different factors such as solvent type, irradiation dose and comonomer composition. The obtained results revealed that when the grafting proce&s of individual AN or AN I NVP mixture were carried out in the presence of 0.1 (wt%) Fe(Ill) salt, the homopolymer formation was effectively reduced and enhanced the grafting reaction. Graft polymerization of individual AN in presence of equal ratios of n-propanol and AN/NVP binary mixture in the presence of methylethyl ketone offered the most homogeneous grafted LOPE and HOPE • films
