Abstract
SUMMARY
D
iabetes mellitus is a major public health problem in Egypt. Egypt is one of the countries with highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus; it was ranked number eight globally, as it had over 7.8 million cases Diabetes in 2015.
The aims of the work were to investigate the relationship between vitamin D level and type 2 diabetes, the relationship between vitamin D level and hemoglobin A1c and to identify the relationship between vitamin D level and insulin resistance in diabetics and non-diabetics.
A case-control study was conducted during the period from December, 2015 to June, 2016. Forty seven newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients and 38 old type 2 diabetic cases in age group [35-70 years], were recruited from the family medicine and internal medicine clinics at Fayoum University Hospital and 54 non diabetic controls comparable to cases in age ± 5years and matching in gender were recruited from other clinics (ENT, dermatology, ophthalmology and surgery clinic) at Fayoum University Hospital.
Blood samples were collected from all participants to measure fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, insulin, 25(OH) vitamin D and calculated homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), a questionnaire was completed at the time of blood colle
