Vitamin D Status among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and its Relation to Glycemic Control

Abstract

SUMMARY D iabetes mellitus is a major public health problem in Egypt. Egypt is one of the countries with highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus; it was ranked number eight globally, as it had over 7.8 million cases Diabetes in 2015. The aims of the work were to investigate the relationship between vitamin D level and type 2 diabetes, the relationship between vitamin D level and hemoglobin A1c and to identify the relationship between vitamin D level and insulin resistance in diabetics and non-diabetics. A case-control study was conducted during the period from December, 2015 to June, 2016. Forty seven newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients and 38 old type 2 diabetic cases in age group [35-70 years], were recruited from the family medicine and internal medicine clinics at Fayoum University Hospital and 54 non diabetic controls comparable to cases in age ± 5years and matching in gender were recruited from other clinics (ENT, dermatology, ophthalmology and surgery clinic) at Fayoum University Hospital.
