Chapter I :
This chapter includes an extensive survey about the synthesis and reactions of quinazoline-2,4-diones.
Chapter II :
This chapter is devoted to the discussion of the experimental re sults carried out in this thesis. Nitration of phthalic acid atlorded ami:-; ture of 3- and 4-nitrophthalic acid which were converted to 3-and 4- nitropht ha lie • anhyrdt•ide. Treatment of 3-nitmplnlwlic anhydride with hy droxylamine hydrochloride in pyridine gave N-hydroxy-3-nitrophthali mide (1) which reacts with benezensulfonyl chloride to giveN-phenyl sul fo ny lox y-3 -nitropht hal imide (2) A I so, N-pheny I suI fony lox y-4- nitro phthalimide (3) was prepared. 5-nitro-2,4-quinazolinedione (4) was pre pared by treating an ethanolic solution of (2) with ammonia.
