PREVALENCE OF HEPATITIS C VIRUS . • ANTIBODIES AMONG DIALYSED PATIENTS AND STAFF IN SOME DIALYSIS UNITS IN ALEXANDRIA

Ehab Mohamed Amin Ahmed;

Abstract

Hepatitis C virus has RNA genome with remarkable similarity to flavi

and pestiviruses.

Hepatitis C virus has been established to cause approximately 85% of
I
post-transfusion hepatitis and is carried by about 0.5-1.5% of blood donors

worldwide.

i
Hepatitis C spread parenterally but appears to be transmitted also be

sexual and/or household contact with chronic carrier and by vertical transmission.

The spectrum (j)f liver disease observed in patients demonstrating
I
seropositivity for HCj infection covers the gamut from asymptomatic blood

donors with normal liver function and no apparent sequelae through acute and chronic hepatitis o hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatic failure.

Hemodialysis has long been recognized as high risk environment for the spread of hepatitijs B, hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus, if at least the i.kected subject is present among the patients of unit.
