Study of the vitreous in myopic macular holes

Mohamed Abdel Hakim Zaki;

Abstract

In this study we evaluated the vitreous for its role in the pathogenesis of macular holes and or development of retinal detachment in patients with myopia and macular holes. Evaluation was done by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, B-scan ulrasonography, and optical coherence tomography. Also we evaluated vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade in management of this complicated form of retinal detachment.

25 patients were selected from the outpatient clinic at Ain Shams university hospital. The inclusion criteria included: the presence of a macular hole, and myopia of -3.00 D or more. The exclusion criteria included: history of trauma, previous ocular
• surgery, opacities in the media that interfere with proper evaluation of the posterior vitreous and the macula, retinal vascular diseases (branch or central retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic macular edema), retinal inflammatory diseases, and primary or secondary glaucoma.

All the patients were subjected to a complete ophthalmic examination, A- and B-scan ultrasonography, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography.

According to the presence of retinal detachment the patients were divided into two groups. Group (A) patients had no retinal detachment in association with the macular hole. Group (B) patients had retinal detachment in association with the macular hole.
