Nurse’s Role toward Psychosocial Problems of Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients

Abstract


The current study aimed to assess nurse's role toward psychosocial problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients.
Subjects & Methods: A descriptive study was carried out at the inpatient department in National Cancer Institute (NCI) affiliated to Cairo University. The study involved 50 nurses who cared for newly diagnosed cancer patients and worked in the previously mentioned setting over a 6 months' period. Tools of data collection: involved an interview questionnaire form and observational checklists to assess nurse's role toward psychosocial problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Results: the results of the study showed that the highest percentage of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory role toward psychological, social, spiritual and sexual problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients. While having satisfactory role toward physical problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients. There was a positive correlation between physical, social, spiritual problems and psychological problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients with statistical significance while there was a positive correlation with statistical insignificance between sexual and psychosocial problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Conclusion: the current study concluded that most of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory role toward psychological, social, spiritual and sexual problems while having satisfactory role toward physical problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Recommendations: the study recommended developing an educational program for nurses about the management of psychological and physical problems of newly diagnosed cancer patients.
