GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF COASTAL DEPOSITS IN THE RED SEA REGION
Hany Guirguis Ishak Abdel Sayed;
Abstract
The coast line of south Sinai and the Red Sea governorates offers a warm and equitable climate throughout the year. The governmeht is planning to develop these areas, as tourism is becoming the third laJgest export earning industry. The Red Sea coasts are accordingly subjeJt to significant interest by many investors seeking to develop large to rist
resort hotels along these coasts. It is therefore important to study these
'
areas to understand the origin and nature of the coastal deposits and dome
I
to some useful conclusions that can be helpful for future development of
the region. . I
The deposits along the Red Sea coasts are derived mainly frbm a variety of sources including: • [
- The drainage basins that supply sediments to wadis, wadi plains anb fan deltas. I
- Eroding headlands that yield to various types of sediments having a wide range of composition depending upon the local geology.
- Carbonate deposits such as coral reefs and remains of marine orgahisms
I
that are cemented to form weak limestone rocks such as the reefal

limestone.
The resulting deposits along the Red Sea coasts show materials that radically differ from the traditional foundation soils and rocks thlt can
be experienced in other parts of the country. It is therefore necesslry to
