FINITE ELEMENT MODELLING FOR RAFT FOUNDATIONS ANALYSIS
Mai Abdel Hady Abdel Rahman Mancy;
Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to describe and investigate the most simplified popular structural approach Winkler model (2D Winkler model). Its accuracy is discussed in comparison to that of the highly sophisticated model (3D SSI model) with regard to the response in the superstructure’s ground raft. The influence of accuracies' difference on results is found and the interaction between structural and geotechnical engineers is optimized.
The model should must consider the interaction between soil and structure. It should be capable to balance the time available for design, make it adequate safety, acceptance of the design by the professional community, and reduce the cost of design. The thesis conclusions can be split up into two parts. One is related to the 3D SSI analyses; the other is related to 2D Winkler analyses of various foundation models that were investigated.
