FadySayed Youssef Selim;

Abstract

Phytochemical, toxicological and pharmacological studies were carried out on Annonasquamosaleaves and seeds that commonly used in folk medicine. Different phytochemicals were analyzed. The toxicological studies (Acute toxicity and effect of prolonged administration) ofleaves and seeds 70% ethanolic extract were investigated. The oral anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, hepatoprotective, diuretic, anti-ulcerogenic, antidiabetic, wound healing and hormone like activity were also investigated in two dosage levels, high and low doses (250-500 mg/kg for leaves and 25-50 mg/kg b.wt for seeds). Moreover, in vitro antibacterial and molluscicidal activities were studied. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and glycosides in both leaves and seeds. Resin was absent in leaves and present in seeds. Tannins and saponins were absent in seedsand present in leaves. LD50 of the studiedleaves and seeds extract were found to be 5 g/kg and 520 mg/kg b.wt. respectively. Prolonged administration of leaves and seeds extracts(8 weeks) at higher dosage level induced significant increase in number of leucocytes, ALT, AST and ALP enzymes. Both tested extracts at high dose showed significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hepatoprotective, diuretic, anti-ulcer, antidiabetic, wound healing and antibacterial activities. Seeds showed no antipyretic effect but leaves showed marked effect. Leaves extract showed no molluscicidal effect but seeds induced marked effect. Leaves and seeds showed progesterone like effect. Seeds showed estrogen like effect but leaves showed no effect. Leaves and seeds showed no androgen like effect.
