Effect of Autoclaving on Cyclic Fatigue of HyFlex and ProFile Vortex Nickel Titanium Rotary Systems

Mohamed Abdelwahab Elnaggar;

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of autoclaving on ProFile Vortex and HyFlex CM systems.
Total sixty files #25 with 4% of both brands were selected for the study. A novel device was designed and manufactured specially for the study along with a custom made artificial canal. Cyclic fatigue testing was done by rotating the files in the artificial canal which had 60° and 5mm radius of curvature. There was two groups, each (n=30). Each group had three subgroups. Subgroups were based on the testing protocol; pilot (continuous), With autoclaving or without autoclaving. Each subgroup was (n=10). Pilot subgroup had only one testing session. Mean NCFs and 25% NCF are then calculated. The remaining two subgroups had four testing sessions, 25% NCF each. In between testing sessions, files were either sterilized or not according to subgroup.
Results showed HyFlex group to have over double fatigue resistance of Vortex group. Testing protocol did not show
