Septic Encephalopathy
Mitwally Ibrahim Mitwally EL- Nabarawy;
Abstract
Septic Encephalopathy (SE) is defined as brain dysfunction due to sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and can also be called sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). There are no proofed consensus criteria to diagnose SE. It shall only be diagnosed, if any other causes of disturbed brain function are excluded, extracranial infection and impaired mental state must be evident.
The incidence of encephalopathy is higher in patients who have bacteremia and evidence of renal, hepatic or multiorgan failure. 70% of patients with bacteremia have neurological symptoms ranging from lethargy to coma, and >80% of them showed electroencephalography abnormalities and patients in the medical and surgical ICUs are at high risk for long-term cognitive impairment.
Factors that lead to SAE are complex and multifactorial and up till now we cannot completely understand the pathogenesis of SE.
Over the past decades, sepsis and sepsis-associated
