The Effect of Alternating Rapid Distraction Rate on Bone Regenerate (An Experimental Study)

Abstract
This study was conducted in order to evaluate the effectiveness of alternating rapid distraction rate on bone regenerate during DO.
This study conducted on 14 goats divided to two groups:
Group A (study group):
Seven animals were included in this group in which distraction was performed at rate of two mm every 48 hourswith single frequencyfor ten days with total distraction distance ten mm.
Group B (control group):
Seven animals were included in this group in which distraction was performed at rate of one mm daily with single frequency for ten days with total distraction distance ten mm.
After the end of the activation period a consolidationperiod of 30 days was maintained.
The examined macroscopic parameter was measurements the length of the of the regenerated bone using EDC, and the examined radiographic parameters was measurements bone density using HU by CBCT, while the examined histological parameters were measurements of outer cortical bone thickness, trabecular bone thickness, and area of osteoid percentage using Leica Qwin and Leica Qgo software programs.
The result of application of alternating rapid distraction rate showed that the length of distracted segment was not statistically significant compared to control group.
The result of bone density in study group was lower than that of control group. It was non- statistically significant difference between two groups.
Also the result of histological evaluations in study groupwas lower than that of control group. The outer cortical bone thickness wasstatistical highly significant and trabecular bone thickness was statistically significant while the area of osteoid percentage was statistically non-significant between two groups.
Conclusion
1. The rate of one millimeter per day is sufficient rate for bone healing.
2. The alternating rapid distraction rate lead to lower bone quality and quantity of the regenerated bone.
