Abstract


Safe and painless labour is a drearr. for the future nther than a reality today. The ideal procedure should producd1icient pain relief with patient's cooperatton and consciou>ness. should not depress the e terus causing prolonged labour, not depress respiration of fetus, not toxic and safe for mother and child.

The first stage of labour stalt with onset of labour pain and end by full cervical dilatation and the pain in this stage ;s due to uterine contraction and dilation of cerv'x and pain impulses travel via viscaal alrerent fibres accompanying the sympathetic erves and enter spinal cord at the Tltl, T 11, T, 2 and L 1 spinal segments. While s cond stage of labour
\\hich began by full cervicai dilatior. and end by delivery of fetus the pain

in this stage is due to stretching of p rineum and distension of pelvic structures by descent of presenting pa!t. fhese impulse travel via pudendal nerves and enter spinal cord at S2, S,, and S4 segments.

Pain relief during labour can be achieved by number of methods as psychological, pharmacological and regional anaesthesia.

Fear which arise from ignorance and loneliness rn labour so no woman should be left alone in labour and full explanation of processes of labour are the basis for psychologi al support for labour and there are a number of forms of psychological anesthesia have been used as natural childbirth, maternal movement and position changes during delivery, abdominal decompression, superficial heat and cold, immersion in water,
