Normal Values for Dimensions of the Heart by Echocardiography in NormalEgyptian Adults

Abstract

The definition of normal values of Egyptian adults would be very valuable for cardiologists. Normal values for dimensions and functions of the heart are very important to avoid misclassification of normal persons into the high -risk category and the reverse. The aim of this study was to define the normal echocardiographic values for Egyptian adults regarding M-mode, two -dimensional echo. The study included 1364 normal adults, ranging in age from 18 years to 35 years old. Patients with severe anemia, any systemic disease and cardiac abnormalities were excluded.Smokers were also excluded. All patients underwent a full echocardiography study including: 1. M- mode echocardiography measured all the following: ejection fraction, right ventricular diameter, inter-ventricular septum thickness, posterior wall thickness, end diastolic diameter, end systolic diameter, left atrial diameter, aortic root diameter. 2. Two- Dimensional echocardiography measured all the following: the major and minor axis dimensions of the cardiac chambers (left ventricle and right ventricle) left atrial dimensions. 3. Doppler echocardiography to exclude any cardiac abnormalities. The study group consisted of 1364 adults their age ranged from 18 to 35 years old. They were all normal, the individuals we examined were 616 male (45.16%) and 748 female (54.84%). As we measured by echocardiography, the results can be summarized as the following: - The study showed a highly significant difference between sex groups for all cardiac dimensions which were studied in this study. - The study showed a significant difference for BSA between males and females in LVIDd, LAD, AoRoot, and RVA. - The study showed a significant difference for BMI groups and IVS, PWT, LVIDd, LVIDs, LAD, RVA and EF (The echo findings increase with increase BMI value). We conclude that correlation to BSA is important as it influences the results and there must be different reference values for males and females separately. We recommend that more studies are needed on wide range ofage groups.
