Psychiatric Sequelae In Children with Lymphatic Leukemia and Their Care Providers

Abstract


lbe purpose of the present study was to assess psychological sequelae of acute lymphoblastic leukemia on both the children and their parents at different stages of the illness.

Une hundred and three patients with acule lymphoblusllc ltltal<.emlu together, with 97 parents were recruited from the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University, within 18 months period. The included patients were 5-16 years old (10±2.4). Patients with premorbid neuropsychiatric disturbances were excluded from the study. The patients were subdivided into 5 subgroups: (I) Gpl: initial diagnosis (2) Gpll: initial complete remission (3) Gplll: maintained complete remission for !year or more but still under antileukemic therapy (4) Gp IV: cured patients who stopped therapy for one year or more (S)GP V: patients in relapse.

The patients were compared to 22 healthy controls and their parents. Children with premorbid neuropsychiatric disturbances or co-morbid chronic illness were excluded from the study.
