COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CORD BLOOD C-PEPTIDE IN INFANTS OF DIABETIC MOTHERS AND NORMAL NEWBORN

Hadil Galal El Din Abdel Halim;

Abstract

C-peptide measurement provides an accurate measure of insulin secretory activity of pancreatic B-cells.

In this- srudy-serurn C-peptide level was measured in cord blood of macrosomic newborns of both diabetic neonates (GDM, IDDM, NIDDM) and non diabetic mothers in comparison with a group of AGA newborn as a control, and related these values to different anthropometric measurements including birth weight, length and skull circumference, mid-ann circumference, body mass index and skinfold thickness.

The present study was conducted on 62 neonates in the Gynecology and Obstetric Hospital, Ain Shams University, they were classified as follows:

Group I -Included 36 macrosomic neonates born to diabetic mothers. They were further subdivided into 3 groups

Group A Included I5 macrosomic neonates born to gestational diabetic mothers (8 males and 7 females)

Group B Included 6 macrosomic neonates born to insulin dependent diabetic mothers (3males and 3 females)

Group C included I5 macrosomic neonates born to non-insulin dependent diabetic motliers (8males and 7 females)

Group II included I5 macrosomic neonates born to non
diabetic mothers (6 males and 9 females)

•Group illincluded II healthy full term neonates as controls
(6 males and 5 females). Their birth weights were average for
. gestatiomil age between 3-3.5 kg.
