FUNCTIONAL MORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE LINGUAL APPARATUS OF THE COMMON MOORHEN, GALLINULA CHLOROPUS MERIDJONALIS

Abstract


The present investigation is concerned with the functional morphology of the lingual apparatus of the common moorhen, Gallinula chlarapus meridiana/is and is performed through studying of the following points:-


I- General morphology of the tongue



A full description of the morphology of the tongue of Gallinula chlarapus meridiana/is is given, and from the functional point of!view, the following parts are described.
1- Free portion of the tongue, which is lanceolat and has dorsa­ median sulcus and anterior lingual nail. The latter carried a brush-like lingual hairs.
2- The laryngeal area, which is about the length of the free portion of the rongue, which in turn is divided into two regiOns; anterior preglottal region and posterior laryngeal mound.
3- The floor of the mouth including the paralingual area.

4- The tongue is suspended to the skull by a paired sheath-like structure (fascia' vaginalis hyoidei), each of which envelops the hyoid horn. Posteriorly, at the end of the hyoid horn, the fascia vaginalis hyoidei forms a coilled cord-like structure,. chorda hyoidei consisting of elastic fibers
