COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE WATER BUDGET OF THE RED SEA AND ARABIAN GULF

ABO EL-HAGAG HIFNY SAYED;

Abstract

The Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf are two similar semi closed basins, they differ in some characteristics and similar in others. The two basins are located in arid subtropical zone, so, they have the same climatic conditions and they are under the same weather variations.

The Red Sea is separated from the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean by the Strait of Bab El Mandab, while the Arabian Gulf is separated from the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian sea by the Strait of Hurmoz. The two basins arc similar in their high rates of evaporation which exceed very much the rates of percipitaton. The two basins compensate their water, lost by evaporation, through the inflow of the mentioned straits. Salinity in the two basins are abnormally high, and cannot be found in other area of the same latitudes.
/

Both of the water of the two basins are highly renewal, and their residence times are relatively small. The residence time of the Arabian Gulf is less than that of the Red Sea. The two basins differ in their depths, area, water, volume and the nature of water exchange with the outer water bodies.
