The Use of Methylene Blue in the Termination of Prolonged Erection Induced by lntracorporeal Injection of Vasoactive Drugs

Abstract
Sympathomimetics are commonly used for treatment of priapism. However, these drugs have dangerous side effects like hypertension and tachycardia.
Our study included 75 patients having prolonged erection of different durations which was induced by ICI of vasoactive drugs. All of them were treated by methylene blue, in early cases of 4-6h duration of erection 50% of patients developed detumescence, from 6-24h only
21.4% had detumescence, and in cases of more than 24h duration of
erection there was no response to methylene blue.
Cases tbat did not respond to methylene blue were given ephedrine and tbe results were different: in 4-6 hours the response was 100%, from
6-24 hours 45% of cases developed detumescence and in > 24 hours
duration of erection there was no response to ephedrine.
The results. showed that methylene blue is effective in the early treatment of prolonged erection besides being a safe drug!acking tbe systemic side effects.ofthe commonly used sympathomimetics.
