Abstract

The status of the myocardium is a critical factor in the prognosis of cardiac disease.

The cardiomyopathy IS a disease of heart muscle that demonstrates a defect in the function of the myocardium precluding the heart from maintaining adequate systemic perfusion with normal filling pressure.

Acute rheumatic fever has a worldwide distribution and continues to be a major cause of heart disease in developing countries. Repeated attacks of rheumatic carditis affect the myocardium and in the long run lead to cardiac fibrosis and myocardial damage.

The present study was carried out on 22 patients (I 3 females and

9 males) with congestive heart failure (12 patients with rheumatic heart disease and 10 patient with cardiomyopathic heart disease). They either attended the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic or were admitted in the Pediatric Hospital, Ain Shams University.

For each patient the following was done: Complete history taking including the onset and course of the disease, duration of illness, symptoms of heart failure, thorough clinical examination and
