Skin Sparing Mastectomy With Immediate Breast Reconstruction
Ahmed Magdy Mahmoud Saleh;
Abstract
Immediate breast reconstruction has become an important fact in the management of many patients undergoing mastectomy. Reconstruction with autologus tissue has the advantage of creating of a breast mound that closely resembles the native breast in shape and consistency.
In addition to the cosmetic issues, there are several advantages to immediate reconstruction over delayed reconstruction. There is medical benefit in avoiding a second episode of anaesthesia and recovery and it is more cost effective by avoiding a second operation.
Skin sparing mastectomy removes the breast tissue, nipple-areola complex, previous biopsy scar and skin overlying superficial tumours. Preservation of the native skin envelope facilitates immediate breast reconstruction.
Regional recurrence after skin sparing mastectomy is a function of the biology of the tumour and the stage of the disease and is not affected by the use of immediate breast reconstruction or skin preserving mastectomy.
