PROPERTIES AND CALSSIFICATION OF WEAK ROCKS

Abstract

The geo-materials of the new reconstruction regions m Egypt have a particular

nature different than the geo-materials in the old regions (Nile valley). There is a group of no friendly geo-materials that are called "Weak Rocks", which are related to many engineering problems falling somewhere between the areas of interest occupied by traditional soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Many of the sampling and testing
techniques currently used for soils and rocks could not always be used for these geo

materials, as they may be insufficient and miss-leading. A special in-situ and laboratory

testing program has to be adapted besides considering geology, which is the essential starting point in the identification and classification of weak rocks.
In this study, properties and behavior of weak rocks are considered mainly at

laboratory scale. Thirteen types of tests were performed on 45 samples belonging to four types weak rocks. The results were used to determine the ranges of properties for weak rocks after confirming the test suitability as an index test. The relationships between the conducted test results were done discussing their correlations. Moreover, the possibility to predict one parameter from another was investigated. Also the bases and the principles for identification and classification of weak rocks \\"ere considered in order to unify and standardize their description and classification.
The obtained results for the tested weak rocks indicated that much attention should

be given to the degradability and deterioration of strength with time. Neve1theless, the geological terminology for rocks were found to be of vital importance as they give precise and accurate meaning and description for rocks besides that they are internationally used. Some of the carried out tests were found ,•ery useful and suitable for weak rock characterization, while others should be used in particular topics. The ranges of the tested weak rocks prope1ties were drawn comparing it with the resulis found in literature. Many correlations between the conducted test results were done, discussing the effect of each studied parameter on the others. Also, it was concluded that the classification systems that take into account both the properties of intact sample and the rock mass are more
important and useful, and should be used.
