BENIGN BILE DUCT STRICTURES; DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Alaa Hussein Abdel-Kazek;
Abstract
Benign bile duct strictures represent a real surgical problem, which can be followed by critical sequelae with significant morbidity and mortality. Wise and prompt management is necessary. Suspicion must be kept in mind for susceptible patients and treatment must be started once a biliary stricture is diagnosed. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic approach and different therapeutic measures used for the benign bile duct strictures.
In this study, thirty-eight patients with benign bile duct strictures were studied. Twenty-eight were females and ten were males. Their ages ranged between 18 and 82 years. The patients were divided into two groups: the iatrogenic group which included patients with strictures due to injury in a previous surgical operation. The other group was the non iatrogenic group which included patients with strictures secondary to other diseases not involving direct injury to the bile ducts.
The iatrogenic group included 21 patients with history of previous surgical operations. Seventeen patients had history of open cholecystectomy, three patients had history of open cholecystectomy with CBD exploration and one patient had history of laparpscopic cholecystectomy. The non-iatrogenic group included 17 patients with different pathological causes of the stricture.
