ANAEROBIC FERMENTATION OF VINASSE
RANDA MOHAMED OSMAN DAHAB;
Abstract
In Hawamdyia sugar factory (Giza Governorate in Egypt), more than
2000 m3/d. vinasse produced from fermentation processes of molasses, and mostly discharged in the Nile River.
Anaerobic digestion was studied for treatment of vinasse . Systems applied
are upflow anearobic sludge blanket and completely mixed.
The effect of some operating parameters on the performance of the USAB and completely mixed systems were studied, these include the organic loading rate, COD loading rate, BOD loading rate, temperature, and hydraulic retention time.
For USAB system
Higher gas production rates were obtained at 0.5days retention time, beginning from 3.75 m3/m3d at 20°C reaching 8 m3/m3 .d at the optimum thermophilic temperature of 55°C . Therefore, the warmer the reactor the shorter retention time needed to complete the digestion for the same COD loading rates , and the maximum gas yield obtained was0.83m3/kg reduced
volatile solids , at retention time equal 8 days , and 55°C .
The efficiency , based on the reduction of volatile solids reached 76. I at 8
days hydraulic retention time and55°C. High reduction in COD of 83.1 %was
3
obtained at the lowest COD loading rate of 2.7 kg COD/m
d at 55"C.
Anaerobic digestion of vinasse was studied also using upflow anaerobic
thetmophilic and mesophilic UASB's operated
(thetmophilic,55"C,followed by mesophilic,37"C) .Their goal
m senes
was to achieve
successful two-stage waste treatment in a dramatic increase in the overall reactor system petformance .
The maximum reduction in COD obtained was about 97.2% at the lowest COD loading rate of 1.53 kg COD/m3d .The values obtained are high compared to the one stage treatment , and is almost higher than that obtained
dming the one stage treatment.
Values of the maxtmum growth rates maxusmg CASB system are proportional to the operating temperatmes within the studying range 20-
55"C,and activation energy of the biochemical reaction for CASB system was
4437.4 cal/gmol. by using the maxvalues.
For completely Mixed system
Higher gas production rates were obtained at 7 days retention time , and 7 kg volatiles lm'. d.,reaching 3.9 m3/m 3d at the optimum mesophilic temperature of 3T'C . The gas yield was 0.81 m'lkg reduced volatiles at 3.39 kg volatiles /m 5 d.
High reduction in COD of 77.5 %was obtained at the lowest COD loading rate of 6.17 kg COD/m3d .
The kinetic constants using completely mixed system are maxKs, Y and Kd
,and thier values 0.0343hr"1, 13.77g COD/L,0.3538,and0.00358hr"1 ,respectively.
