Expressed Emotions among Families Having Schizophrenic Patient

Abstract


Aim: This study aim was to assess expressed emotions among families having patient with schizophrenia. A Design: Descriptive exploratory design was utilized in this study. Sample: Convince of 100 caregivers having patient with schizophrenia who attended the out patient clinic at El-Abbassia Mental health Hospital were recruited for the conduction of this study, Setting: The outpatient clinic at El-Abbassia Mental health Hospital Tools: Sociodemographic data sheet and expressed emotions scale. Results of this study: Revealed that 43% of caregivers showed high expressed emotions versus 57% of caregivers showed low expressed emotions. The frequency of over involvement was found in 73%, criticism and hostility were found in 43% and warmth and positive remark were found in 59%. Conclusion:The caregivers of patients with schizophrenia showed low expressed emotions than high expressed emotions and higher over involvement than hostility and criticism and warmth and positive remarks.Recommendation: The study recommended that there is a need for frequent psycho-educational programs and counseling services for family care-givers in order to help them to cope with the burden of caring.
