Student’s Problem Solving Abilities and Self-Esteem at Technical Health Institutes of Nursing

Abstract


The nursing profession has evolved significantly in
the past 100 years so that it requires expertise in a broad
range of skills and abilities. A good nurse requires criticalthinking
skills, in-depth knowledge, and problem solving
abilities. The ability to identify a problem, evaluate all of
the relevant factors and develop a good solution is
essential. Part of this process is the development of
personal characteristics such as courage, self-control, good
decision making, and consideration for others. Hence,
nursing education should prepare students to make
decisions independently using critical and analytical
thinking, and to demonstrate problem solving to address
actual and potential health needs of patients (Azizi et al.,
2015).
Self-esteem is composed of both an appraisal of selfworth
based on personal achievements and anticipation of
evaluation by others. People, including college students, with
