Abstract
Abstract
Diarrhea is regarded as a major determinant of childhood morbidity and one of the leading causes of death in children under five years of age in the world. Aim: Assess mothers' care for their children under five years with diarrhea. Setting: outpatient clinics of pediatric of Sayed Galal University hospital affiliated to (al azhar university). Sample: 127 mothers and their children were selected randomly from outpatient clinics. Tools: An interviewing questionnaire to assess a) socio-demographic data, b) Mother' Knowledge about diarrheal disease, c) Mothers' reported practices regarding prevention and management of diarrheal disease, d) Factors related to diarrheal disease, e) Child health needs and problems related to diarrheal disease and f) assessment of home environment. Results: the mean age of the studied children was 26.8±1.3 and about two thirds of children (59.0%) were males. the mean age of the studied mothers was 33.6±2.6 and more than one third of mothers (31.5%) had primary education. There is a highly statistically significant relation between mothers’ socio-demographic characteristics (age, education level, occupation, residence and family number) and their knowledge related to diarrheal disease (P <0.01). There is a statistically significant relation between mothers’ socio-demographic characteristics (age, occupation, residence, monthly income, family number and child less than five years) and their practice regarding care of their children suffering from diarrhea (P <0.05). Conclusion: More than two fifths of the studied mothers had satisfactory level of knowledge regarding diarrhea. Also, one third of the studied mothers had correctly done practice regarding care of their children suffering from diarrhea. There is a statistical significant positive correlation between mother’s knowledge and their practices related to diarrheal disease with (P <0.05). Recommendations: Educational health program for mothers is needed in order to increase awareness and improve their skills.
