Abstract

E
nd-stage renal disease (ESRD) is one of the main health problems in gypt . Currently , hemodialysis represents the main mode for treatment of chronic kidney disease stage 5 , previously called ESRD or chronic renal failure.
Although HDis often used for treatment of ESRD , no practice guidelines are available in Egypt . Healthcare facilities are seeking nowadays to develop practice guidelines for the sake of improving healthcare services . In the healthcare sector in Egypt , trials for establishing guidelines have been lead by the MOH .
This work is a part of a project aiming at statement of the current status of dialysis patient in Egypt using a questionnaire . This project is modulated by Nephrology Department , Ain Shams university . This study was done in October 2013 .
Our study sample consisted of 250 clinically stable chronic patients on regular thrice-weekly HD . Patients were collected from El Salam Hospital and some private dialysis centers in cairo .
In all patients , we recorded ; full history and clinical examination stressing on etiology of renal disease and associated complications , full review of all medical records over the last 6 months and details of HD prescriptions (Doctors , nurses and administration orders) .
Results of this study demonstrated that , there were many causes for ESRD in the study population as follows : HTN in 56% of patients , DM in 16.4% of them and unknown etiology in 9.6% of them . These results agreed with most of the studies where HTN & DM were the main causes of renal failure .
Different comorbidities in the study population were : HTN in 42% of patients , DM in 15.2% of them , ISHD in 8.8% of them and CLD in 3.6% of them .
In our study , 75.2% of population were not working , while the other 24.8% were working .
Dependency status in the study population showed that , 22% of the patients were dependant , while the other 78% were not . It also showed that , 10.4% of patients were wheelchair bound , while 11.6% of them were wheelchair unbound .

In our study , we found that ; most of the patients received 3 HD sessions per week each lasting 4 hours , this was consistent with KDOQI guidelines and recommendations for HD adequacy.
The mean value of HD period was 4 (± 2.9) years . The mean value of patients dry weight was 77.2 (± 14.2) kg , while the mean value of average weight gain among them was 2.1 kg .
Sponsoring status in the study population showed that , 58% of patients were sponsored by the MOH , 41.6% were sponsored by Health Insurance , while only 1 patient was sponsored by his company
