Percutaneous Autogenous Marrow Grafting In Cases Of NonUnions

Mohamed Mahmoud El-Sayed Samaha;

Abstract

Autogenous marrow injection was used to stimulate healing for nonunited fractures in 50 patients aged between
9-74 years, 40 males (80%) and 10 females (2Q%). The

duration of nonunion before bone marrow injection ranged between 7 months to 16 years, 6 patients (12%) more than 36 months & 44 patients (88%) less than 36 months. The gap at nonunion site ranged between 1 to 30 mm,10 patients (20%) more than 5 mm & 40 patients (80%) less than 5 mm. Thirty patients (60%) were of atrophic nonunion and 20 patients (40%) were of hypertrophic type. According to the classification of Paley et a/1989, 35 patients (70%) were of
\ type A, 5 mobile and 30 stiff nonunion, and 15 patients (30%) were of type B,lO with bony defect and 5 without bony defect. Eleven patients (22%) were of infected nonunion stage IV Cierny et al 1985 classification, 10 draining and one dry.

Most of these patients had received multiple attempts to achieve union before using the marrow graft. 22 patients had bone graft done to them previously. For a scientific purpose, to give a neutral judgement, autogenous bone marrow injection was used without supplementation by any of definitive treatment for nonunion.
