Abstract

Egypt is the largest non OPEC oil producer in Africa and the continent second largest producer of natural gas. Meanwhile, Egypt is the largest oil and natural gas consumer in Africa. Egypt has the largest oil refinery capacity in Africa. Its capacity is around 700.000 bbl/d while the country’s refined petroleum output is around 450.000 bbl/d.
Some reports give indication that Egypt will see an upswing in investment in the oil sector in the coming years. Estimates of Egypt’s oil refining capacity differs among publications. The Arab oil and gas directory estimates that Egypt’s refining capacity is 704.000 bbl/d while OJC estimates that it is higher at 726.000 bbl/d. Nevertheless, both estimates still qualify Egypt as the largest oil refining capacity holder in Africa. Egypt’s refining capacity is expected to increase in late 2016 when a new 85,000 bbl/d refinery begins operation.
From the above it is clear that the O & G sector plays a vital key role in Egypt. The industry is a pillar and critical engine in the growth for the national economy, as both are significant contributor to GDP and one of the main source of foreign currency and a key destination for foreign direct investment .
The oil and gas sector has seen a rapid growth of consumption that has been driven by industrial output. Industrial growth is accompanied by sever environmental impacts. The most intense and diverse impacts are faced during the development and production stage.
Since the environment is sensitive. Therefore attention is increasingly devoted to environmental issues devoted to oil and gas operations. Environmental management system “EMS” was implemented as a proactive and strategic tool is utilized to systematically manage all activities in oil and natural gas operation that add to environmental impacts.
