SYNTHESIS AND REACTIVITY OF SOME NEW ACTIVE METHYLENE DERIVATIVES

Abstract
We report here on the synthesis of some new benzimidazole derivatives and their utility as versatile building blocks for the construction of several heterocyclic ring systems for biological screening.
Thus, 1-methyl-2-acetylbenzirnidazole (26) reacts with dimethyl formamide-dimethylacetal (DMF-DMA) to afford the versatile, hitherto unreported E-1-(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-3-N,N-dimethylaminoprop-2- enone (33) (Chart 1).
