CLINICAL EVALUATION OF RESORBABLE GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION MEMBRANE AS A MECHANICAL BARRIER FOR CLOSURE OF ORO-ANTRAL FISTULA
AHMED MOHAMED FARAG;
Abstract
This study was done to evaluate the role of the guided tissue regeneration membrane in closure of oroantral communication, clinical and radiographical evaluation was carried out.
Ten patients were included in this study, they were selected from the outpatient clinic, Oral Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. They were divided equally into 2 groups. Patients of both groups were treated by surgical closure of the oroantral defect using buccal advancement flap in which resorbable guided tissue regneration membrane was used in (G.I) as a study group, while, in (G.II) the oroantral defect was closed without using the resorbable guided tissue regeneration membrane as a control group. Patient sample consisted of seven males and three females, each patient was examined both clinically and radiographically for assessment of the healing of the oral defect and antral condition for 2 weeks. 1, 2 and three months post-operatively, all the operations were carried out under general anaesthesia. Panoramic radiographs revealed that, the cloudiness of the antrum in (G.I) became clear earlier than (G.II) starting from the second post-operative month. However, at the end of the post-operative follow up periods, the sinuses of both groups became clear except two cases in (G.II), periapical radiographs at the end of the follow-up period showed few fine bony trabiculation starting to gap the defect. Also C.T scan showed marked reduction in the dimensions of the bony defect in (G.I) more than (G.II).
