Non invasive proportional assist ventilation (PAV) in Management of acute respiratory failure

Abstract


This study was conducted between August, 2001 and July 2003 in the respiratory intensive care of Assiut university hospital. A total of 114 patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) were studied, including 64 patients in group I, and 50 patients in-group II. Group I are acute on chronic respiratory failure .[caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including 51patients, and obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) including 13 patients], and group II are acute denovo respiratory failure [caused by acute sever asthma including 20. patients, cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (CPE) including 10 patients, community acquired pneumonia (CAP) including 10 patients, pulmonary embolism (PE) including 7 p tients and ARDS including 3 patients]. Non invasive ventilation was delivered via a face mask connected to BiPAP vision ventilator, and is adjusted to PAVIT mode.
