Correction of genu varum in children by temporary hemiepiphysiodesis

Abstract

Our radiographic evaluation demonstrated the successful correction of femoral and tibial genu varum deformities in 28 of 30 limbs in 20 patients.
Based on our results, we believe the temporary hemiepiphysidesis allows for the safe, gradual correction of femoral and tibial genu varum deformities in children and young adults. It is accurate and well-tolerated, with a very low complication rate when compared with osteotomy.
Temporary epiphysiodesis give desirable effects represented in achievement of full correction of the deformity regaining normal alignment of the knee with restoration of normal mechanical axis of the lower limb.
To achieve this it should be combined with good pre-operative planning represented in good radiographic standing long films imaging to detect varus or valgus mal-alignment, to calculate mechanical axis deviation and abnormality in LDFA & MPTA. Good pre-operative planning should also include timing of hemi-epiphysiodesis regarding age of the patient, strict follow up of the patients post-operatively to monitor rate of correction per month.
