SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Between Decemberl999 and February 2002, 22 patients with 23 fresh pi!on fractures of the distal tibia were treated by variety of methods at the department of orthopedic surgery and traumatology unit of Assiut university hospital.
In this series, there were 13 males and 9 females. These patients were followed up until clinical and radiological bone union was evident.
The average follow up period was 5.5 months with a range from 3-
12 months.
From the present study we can sum up the following conditions:
(I) Every pi!on fracture of the distal tibia is an individual problem and the decision to treat it by any method should be based on a realistic assessment of the advantages and hazards of each method and the circumstances of the particular case.
(2) Open pilon fractures, lower tibia, have more complications than those with intact skin, however, separating these fractures into open and closed does not adequately distinguish between severe and less severe injuries and many factors may alter the severity of these fractures as the mechanism of injury, the cause of the trauma, the degree of comminution.
(3) Open fractures deserve special considerations and the extent of the soft tissue injury must be carefully assessed.
