EFFECT OF HOME CARE ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PATIENTS UNDERGOING LIVER TRANSPLANTATION

Abstract

Liver transplantation has had a profound impact on the care of patients with end-stage liver disease and is the most effective treatment for many patients with liver failure. The study aims to evaluate the effect of the home care on the quality of life of patients undergoing liver transplantation. Research design: A quasi-experimental study. Setting: The study was conducted at Ain Shams University Hospitals, Wadi El Nile Hospital and Egypt Air Hospital Organ Transplant Units. Sampling: A purposeful sample included eighty liver transplant recipients. Tools: 1) An interviewing questionnaire for assessing patient's sociodemographic characteristics, health history, and patient's knowledge related to liver transplantation. 2) Patients performance of daily living activities. 3) Assessment of patient's quality of life QOL (4) Assessment of patient's self physical examination vital signs check up. 5) An observation checklist for assessing home environment regarding safety and infection control measures. Results: Post implementation of the home care program most of the liver transplant recipients had satisfactory level of knowledge and performance. Nearly two thirds applied infection control measures at home. The majority performed independent activities of daily living and adequate self physical health examination. About half of the liver transplant recipients had good quality of life six month post implementation the home care program. Recommendation: The study recommended the continuity of care for patients undergoing liver transplant through a discharge plan encompassing home care activities.
