IMPACT OF TRAINING PROGRAM REGARDING CARING FOR NEUROLOGICAL PATIENTS IN COMA UPON NURSES PERFORMANCE

Abstract

It is very important for nursing staff to engage in plenty of ongoing training as well. The needs of neurological coma patients continue to change and there are new developments in procedures. The education of nurses never stops as they are required to continually master new skills and concepts throughout their career. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a training program regarding caring for neurological patients in coma upon nurses’ performance through assessing nurses’ performance “knowledge and practice” regarding caring for neurological patients in coma, planning, developing and implementing the training program and evaluate the impact of the training program regarding caring for neurological patients in coma upon nurses’ performance. Data were collected from intensive neurological care unit and emergency department and geriatric ICU at Ain Shams University Hospitals. The study was conducted on thirty-two nurses who have been selected for the program pre, post and after 6 month later. Data were collected through: (1) Self-administered questionnaire sheet which is divided into two parts: Part one concerned with sociodemographic data of the nurses under study; part two assess knowledge of nurses working with neurological coma patients “pre, post and 6 months after program implementation. (2) Nurses’ performance observational checklist: To assess level of nurses’ practice pre, post and 6 months after the program implementation. (3) Nurses’ attitude assessment sheet to assess nurses’ attitude towards neurological coma patients. Results of this study showed that, noticeable improvement in the nursing performance “knowledge and practice “were detected after implementation of the training program
