Bond Strength Durability of a Newly Introduced Universal Adhesive System to Dentin

Hoda Abd El Aziz Mohammed Riad;

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the bond strength durability of a universal adhesive when used in etch & rinse and self-etching bonding techniques, and under dry & moist dentin surface condition. A total of 160 composite resin samples were prepared for this study. They were divided into 2 major groups (80 specimens each) according to the bonding technique used. Each major group was divided into two sub-groups according to the condition of the dentin surface. And each subgroup was then further divided into two divisions according to the storage time employed. Micro-shear bond strength testing was done using Universal Testing Machine, and the test was run at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min until failure. The μSBS in MPa was calculated by dividing the load (Newton) over the respective surface area (mm2).
The results of this study showed that the bonding system and dentin surface condition had a significant effect on the micro-shear bond strength of the universal adhesive to dentin (p= 0.005 and p=0.0001 respectively), while storage time had no significant effect on the micro-shear bond strength (p=0.508). The etch-and-rinse bonding technique and the moist dentin surface condition showed higher micro-shear bond strength than the self-etch bonding technique and the dry dentin surface condition respectively.
