.SELECTION FOR INCREASING EGG PRODUCTION CHARACTERS IN TWO LOCAL STRAINS OF CHICKENS
ENAYAT ABO EL-AZEUM HASSAN;
Abstract
This work was carried out at Sakha Poultry Production Reearch Station, Animal Production Research Institute, Kafr El-Sheeikh, Ministry of Agriculture, during three successive generations (2002/2003, 2003/2004 and
2004/2005). In order to study the direct response to selection for egg number
and egg weight at 40 weeks of age on Inshas and Silver Montazah strains of chickens, respectively. And its correlated response on body weight and body measurements at different periods, age at sexual maturity, duration period of the first ten eggs, egg number at 48 weeks of age, egg weight at 48 weeks of age, egg mass at 40 and48 weeks and feed conversion at 40 and 48 weeks of age. Moreover, calculation the heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations between studied traits.
Results obtained could be summarized as follows:
1- After two generations of selection for increasing egg number at 40 weeks of age in Inshas strain the realized response was 5.75 and 5.6 egg in the first and second generations, respectively. Moreover, increased egg number at
48 weeks of age and egg mass as well as improved feed conversion at 40 and
48 weeks of age. Also, reduced age at sex maturity and duration period of the first ten eggs.
2- After two generations of selection for high egg weight at 40 weeks of age in Silver Montazah strain, the realized response was 2.39 and 2.03 gram in the first and second generation respectively. Moreover, increased egg weight at
48 weeks, egg mass at 40 and 48 weeks of age, age at sex maturity, duration
period of the first ten eggs and improved feed conversion.
3- The genetic correlation from sire plus dam component of variance between egg number at 40 weeks of age and egg production traits resulted in negative correlation with body weight at sexual maturity, age at sexual maturity, duration period of the first ten eggs, egg weight at 40 and 48 weeks of age and feed conversion at 40 and 48 weeks of age, while positive correlation with egg number at 48 weeks of age. Moreover, the same trend was observed for the phenotypic correlation for these traits with egg number at 40 weeks of age.
4- The genetic correlation from sire plus dam component of variance between egg weight at 40 weeks of age and egg production traits resulted in the positive correlation with body weight at sexual maturity, age at sexual maturity, duration period of the first ten eggs, egg weight at 48 weeks of age and egg mass at 40 and 48 weeks of age, while negative correlation with egg number and feed conversion at 40 and 48 weeks of age
5- Generally, according to the results of the present selection experiment cleared that selection program should be put to improved the performance of Inshas (as a new breeds) for future egg production and crossed with Silver Montazah strain to produce a commercial hybrid used in rural production m Egypt and Africa
