Abstract

H
CC is one of the commonest cancers worldwide. It is a major health problem and its incidence is increasing. The presence of cirrhosis is the major risk factor and this is largely due to chronic HCV and HBV infection. HCC carcinogenesis is likely to involve interplay of viral, environmental and host factors . HCC also represent the third cause of cancer related death with an estimated incidence of about 662,000 cases per year.
HCMV is a highly transmissible and prevalent beta herpesvirus . Although HCMV has been reported as involved in hepatitis , its role in cancer is just starting to emerge.
Aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of HCMV in patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
The present study was conducted on 80 patients suffering from liver cirrhosis and HCC and 40 healthy control. Three groups of subjects were included in this study 40 as control , 40 patients with cirrhosis and HCC and 40 patients with cirrhosis and without HCC.
