CYCTATIN C AS A MARKER FOR GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE IN CHILDREN WITH RENAL DISEASES

GHADA FAOWZY AGLAN;

Abstract

Glomerular filtration rate is the most-important functional parameter in pediatric nephrology.

Recent studies suggest that serum cystatin C was an alternative marker of glomerular filtration rate in children to serum creatinine, which considered the most common used endogenous marker of renal function.

The serum creatinine production is proportionated to the muscle mass, incontrary to cystatin C that is independent of
gender and muscle mass.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate cystatin C as a marker for glomerular filtration rate in pediatric patients with some renal diseases in relation to serum creatinine and
creatinine clearance.

This work included fifty-three patients (32 males and 21 females) with ages ranging between 2-14 years, suffering from some renal diseases. They were classified into three groups, group (1) included 14 patients with acute glomerulonephritis (AGN), group (2) included 20 patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS), and group (3) included 19 patients with renal
failure (RF).

In addition, twenty-three apparently healthy control children (14 males and 9 females) with ages ranging between
