IMMUNOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF UVEITIS
Shereen Samir Banoub;
Abstract
The immune system is divided into innate and acquired systems. The innate is the first line of defense against attack. While the acquired includes two subdivisions; the cellular immune response which is mediated by T lymphocytes "originated from the thymus", and the humoral immune response which is mediated by the immunoglobulins "secreted from plasma cells (activated B lymphocytes which are originated from the bone marrow)".
The different blood cells involved in the immune response have been discussed. Cytokines are hormones carrying out many functions in the acquired and innate immunity. The complement system, its functions, its pathways have been described. The five types of hypersensitivity reactions are very important in the pathogenesis of uveitis. Also the HLA and its associations with some diseases is an important etiological factor.
