Quality Care Related to Medication Administration: Acomparative study

Abstract

Medication administration is the basic nursing function that involves skillful technique and consideration of the patient safety .drug may be a primary means of therapy for a patient with health problem, but any drug can cause harmful effect when administrated incorrectly. The nurse is responsible for understanding a drug`s action , and it`s site , drug`s name, preparation, factors affecting it`s action, monitoring the patient responses (Baldacci, J. & Harvy, B. 2010). The aim of this study was to assess nurses' knowledge, performance regarding to medication administration, and audit nurses 'documentation regarding to medication administration. This comparative study was carried out at El-Demerdash Hospital and Nasser Institute. It included 30 nurses from each of the two settings. The data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire sheet for nurses‟ knowledge, an observation checklist for their performance. The tools were face and content-validated by a jury group of experts in nursing and medical administration. They were pilot-tested on 6 nurses to assess their clarity and applicability. The pilot also showed excellent reliability of  Summary 142 the knowledge scale with a Cronbach alpha coefficient 0.933.
