Age related macular degeneration may be
j classified into a non exudative type characterized by drusen and abnormalities of the retinal pigment
epithelium and an exudative type characterized by choroidal neovascularization, retinal pigment epithelium detachments and tears and fibrovascular disciform scarring. Although only 10% of patients have the exudative form, yet the vast majority of patients with legal • blindness from age related macular degeneration have the exudative form (Bressler et at.,
1994b).
