Polymers as Drug Carrier Systems for Colon Delivery

Omneya Mohamed Abdel Kader;

Abstract

Oral delivery of drugs to the colon is valuable in treatment of colon diseases such as (ulcerative colitis, chron's disease, carcinomas and infections) where by a high local concentration can be achieved and also minimizing the side effects that occur due to the release of drugs in upper G.I.T, or the unnecessary systemic drug absorption. The colon presents less hostile conditions for drug delivery because of less diversity and intensity of enzymatic activities.• In addition, the residence time of dosage forms is longer in the colon which can be useful for prolonged drug therapy.
