NEWLY PLANTED CITRUS NURSLINGS AS AFFECTED BY SOME WINTER COVER CROPS
Saber Saad Bassiony;
Abstract
The efTects of the two winter cover crops berseem (Tr[folium alexandrinum) ami broad beans (Viciafaba) on growth of Navel orange and mandarin nurslings grown in the field and in pots were tested during
1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons in the experimental farm of the Faculty or Agriculture, Kafr EI-Sheikh, Tanta University. Mean shoot length, the total length of shoots per nursling, increment in trunk diameter percentage, total leaf area, leaf dry weight, top/root ratio, and leaf NPK content were determined. Some root parameters, such asroot volume, root dry weight, the total root length, and the total capacity of the root surface were also determined.
Results of field experiment could be summarized as follows:
1- Berseem and broad beans used as winter cover crops decrease vegetative growth of orange and mandarin plants estimated as, mean shoot length of spring growth cycle, total length of shoots, top/root ratio, and total leaf area per nursling. This reduction was more pronounced when berseem was used as winter cover crop. No evident trend could be obtained concerning leaf dry weight as affected by using
cover crops.
2- Trunk diameter was increased when berseem or broad beans were used as cover crop.
3- Root dry weight was decreased with the use of any of the two cover crops especially when berseem was used. Total root length, root volume and total capacity of root surface were also decreased especially when broad beans was used as cover crop.
